Chester's Tip:

Oh No... I was taking off the step trim, and a screw head is stripped out!

    No worries,

Use a left-handed drill bit to get out a screw that has a stripped head. (Yes, they do exist, more rightly called a  left threaded, or reverse drill bit.)  The heat and friction will eventually cause it to grab and remove the screw.  If a hardware store isn't handy, you can use a hacksaw blade to cut a slot in the head to use a flat screwdriver.  It's not as easy, but it usually works.

There is also a little kit that is made for this, and I haven't found anything that works better.  The principle is like the old fashioned Ease-Out.  These come in a kit with four sizes, each has a drill tip on one end, and the extractor on the other end.  The are operated with the drill in reverse.  The drill end is sized and shaped perfectly to give the extractor something to bite into.  I have seen these kits advertised on TV for $20 plus freight, and they send you a 2nd set for a separate fee.  I just go pick them up at harbor freight for around $4 per set!

Sometimes, the head of the screw breaks off, (or you accidentally screw all the way through it).  Don't worry about it, once you are able to get the step trim off, you can remove the broken screw with vice grips.

If even that should fail, grind it off flush, and drill a new hole beside it in the step trim piece, and once you reinstall the step trim piece, use a very small drill bit to make a new pilot hole for the screw.
